FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE THEATRE PLAY LOS AMOS DEL MUNDO, CALDERON DE LA  BARCA PRIZE WINNER 2015.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

In 2015 Los amos del mundo was awarded the prestigious Calderón de la Barca national theatre prize andprize and has been recently published by the Centro de Documentación Teatral.

In November a staged reading was held in Spanish National Theatre Centro Dramático Nacional-Teatro Valle-Inclán. The cast was as follows: Veronica Forqué, Elías González, José Maya, Elena Rey and Miguel Valentín.

We now have a date and venue for the premiere of the play. The Auditorium of Carlos III University of Madrid will hold the premiere of Los amos del mundo in October 2017. Apart from this, next spring, a second reading of the play will be staged in New York at AENY. And Sarah Maitland, professional theatre translator and senior lecturer in Translation Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, will write the English translation and provide dramaturgical support throughout the translation, workshopping and rehearsal process.

SYNOPSIS:

Miguel, a young twenty-something hoping to take an important role at his father’s company, witnesses a suicide while waiting for an underground train.
Before jumping, the victim warns him that witnessing the end of someone else’s life changes the  life of the witness forever. It is a curse that will have an irreversible effect on Miguel’s life.

WHY LOS AMOS DEL MUNDO?

“When I visited Pompeii, I was very affected by the idea of bodies being transformed into sculptures at the exact moment when a body stops being live flesh, when it stops being flesh in motion and instead becomes a perennial object.

Through the Pompeii body-objects and the objects themselves (jugs and shields), the tour guide explained to us how our ancestors lived; however the absence of life and the vision of a terrifying death - which must have been the fate of the citizens of Pompeii when the lava meteorites hit them – impose themselves and I can’t stop thinking that the only thing that survives time are objects.

We die and what we leave behind us for all eternity are these. These are Los amos del mundo [The masters of the world]. During the time we are given we believe - like Miguel, the main character in the play - that we are the masters of the world but only objects have that eternal quality in their essence. It is objects that remain to tell the story to those that come after.

I can’t stop thinking that it shouldn’t be like this. To comfort myself I imagine that the only way to be is to shield oneself in the multitude. The multitude is the only engine that generates change, and it’s in the multitude that one finds the strength and power to be the masters of the world. It is the multitude we find in the theatre.

Despite the delirium of our age, marked as it is by the omnipresence of money, every one of us must acknowledge that we are not, and we will never be, the masters of the world. We die.”

PREMIERE OF THE PLAY:

I want to produce the play and I want to bring it to the Spanish stage. After that, I would also like to explore the possibility of touring the play across South America. María José Ramirez, a student in cultural management from Colombia is working with me me in this regard.

Working together we have seen the sheer number of grants available for theatrical tours across Europe and further afield and, given that the play has been awarded a renowned national prize for theatre granted especially to emerging dramatists, this makes such funding bids more accessible. However, we need this first impetus in order to finance the production of the play until the day of its premiere, because we cannot access any further grants until the play has actually premiered… This is why we need your help!

We have talked to a number of theatres that would be happy to premiere our play and we have a plan to part-finance this aspect of the production. We have applied for state funding and we are talking with many potential supporters, from sponsors to producers. We estimated that our call for crowdfunding finance will cover around one third of the total cost of the project.

In the meantime if you would like to have a taste on the project, the first scene of the play will be staged on Microteatro por Dinero in Madrid from May the 3rd until the 28th so you are welcome to come and meet us there :)  You can buy your tickets here: https://taquilla.microteatro.es/madrid/programacion?mes=05&ano=2017&obra=&sesion_id=3&entradas_num=1
