INTRODUCTION
¿Who are we?
Intxaurrondotik Wukrora Elkartea is a non-profit organization working alongside Father Ángel Olaran in Wukro and the Tigray region, with the objective of improving the quality of life in the area.
What is happening?
The Tigray region, where Intxaurrondotik Wukrora Elkartea is working, is considered an area of chronic food insecurity. Recent reports from the Regional Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tigray show that only 10,9% of households in the region produce enough to cover family nutrition needs.
Ángel Olaran’s major contribution to the area – where he has been working for nearly 30 years – has been building and starting up Saint Mary’s College in 1995, which has become the region’s leading institute for professional training. Every year more than 400 young people are trained in agriculture, trade, mechanics, welding, electricity and plumbing at Saint Mary’s. After decades of work in the region, it can be stated that educating the population is the best way of contributing to sustainable development, providing the inhabitants with the necessary skills and abilities to influence a change in the current situation of food insecurity.
The chronic food insecurity in Wukro and the Tigray region is the intervention and the reason behind the TASTES project.
The people’s ignorance about nutrition and how they should nourish properly, as well as the lack of appropriate equipment and notions about food storing and processing techniques is one of the basic strategies addressed by the TASTES project. On top of that, the TASTES project intends to start up a Hostelry and Gastronomy School in Wukro, as well as to develop profit generating activities within the agrifood sector such as remunerated training and the launch of commercial activities. All this will contribute to the development of the region from the point of view of its economic and industrial growth, allowing the check-out of the generated products, as well as providing jobs for the population.
Moreover, the TASTES project intends to help with the development of tourist activity presently emerging in the region by supplying quality raw material (food), adequate level of restaurant industry activities and hostelry qualified workforce.
