El año pasado celebramos el 5to aniversario del Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) (www.katjazz.com), la escuela de música que ha cambiado la educación musical de Nepal y ha dado esperanzas a tantos niños y jóvenes de hacer lo que ellos quieren hacer: música.
Nepal es uno de los países más pobres del planeta y su educación musical está todavía en pañales, aunque por lo menos ahora ya existe.
Con la celebración del 5to aniversario y sin quererlo, surgió el Nepal Music Education Festival, el único festival de educación musical en la tierra de los Himalayas. El festival tiene como objetivo promover la educación musical (algo que ya ha sido comprobado que tanto ayuda a la formación de un individuo) con clases magistrales, charlas, clases de formación de educadores, conciertos y entre otra cosas, programas de interacción entre diversas castas, culturas y clases sociales. Para hacer esto posible traemos a Nepal educadores que nos ayuden voluntariamente.
El KJC funciona como una ONG pero nunca ha sido subvencionada, todas las ayudas que tenemos vienen de forma privada y músicos y educadores musicales que vienen a enseñar a los alumnos de música de forma voluntaria.
KJC tiene muchos proyectos sociales y entre ellos está este festival que es una herramienta única de aprendizaje. Tiene una duración de 10 días, del 29 de septiembre al 8 de octubre. Esperamos tener más de 50 alumnos de música y unos 75-100 profesores de música, suponiendo que estos enseñan a una media de 100 alumnos en sus respectivos colegios, llegaremos indirectamente a más de 7500 chic@s.
Como el KJC dá unas 40 becas por año, todo el dinero que supere lo que pedimos irá a para al 'KJC Scholarship Fund' para becar a muchos más estudiantes necesitados.
Last year the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (www.katjazz.com) celebrated its 5th anniversary. What started as a project to have a little more space for my private students, became the leading music school for Jazz and popular music in South Asia. We celebrated the festival in the way we best know, with music education and for that we brought Dr. Gene Aitken who gave us the first and most important push at the beginning, back in 2008. As many others that help us, Dr. Gene did not charge anything for his work, and the reason for this is because KJC functions as an NGO with the difference that we have never been funded by anyone. The 5th anniversary festival was the first stone for the Nepal Music Education Festival (NMEF), a festival who is helping so many musicians and music educators in Nepal. This is one way and in many cases the only way they can share with foreigner musicians and music educators their passion and knowledge since it is very hard for Nepalese to get visas to go abroad to study, besides it is really difficult for them to cover the economic expenses of the trip. NMEF also has a program for the Nepal Music Educators’ Society (www.nmes.org.np), a society created in 2008 to help and give knowledge to the Nepali school music teachers. We believe that keeping Nepal Music Education Festival alive, with your help, will open new doors to push the government to implement music education as a degree in the Nepali public or private universities.
Ayudas para hacer algo en las artes y sobre todo en la música, que no es tangible, en Nepal son pocas y las pocas que hay son dadas si se tiene contactos. El gobierno de Nepal no da ayudas porque cuando hay gobierno, su trabajo es hacer que no los echen. Las ayudas vienen de embajadas y ONGs, las cuales tienen a sus amigos y subvencionan proyectos hechos por ellos y para su beneficio. Este es el mayor problema que nos encontramos a la hora de intentar hacer festivales en Nepal y conseguir ayudas para becar estudiantes y para que esto no sea un impedimento tenemos que buscar otras formas de financiación, por ejemplo esta.
Es importantísimo que Nepal se eduque y parte de esta educación tiene que ser musical, no solo para preservar sus raíces culturales si no también por el papel que la música tiene en la educación de un individuo.
El KJC ha ido cambiando poco a poco la percepción social de este arte; ya tenemos padres que aceptan que sus hijos sean músicos; tenemos alumnos que ya ven un futuro en ser músicos y que con nuestra educación han conseguido becas completas o han sido aceptados en universidades de Alemania, Holanda, Singapur o Estados Unidos.
Estamos luchando por tener un programa de educación musical en alguna universidad de Nepal y para conseguir todo esto necesitamos hacer mucho ruido para que nos presten atención. Parte de este plan son los festivales que hacemos y el Nepal Music Education Festival es el más grande de ellos. Para que lo consigamos necesitamos traer educadores de otras partes del planeta, que aunque no nos cobran por su tiempo, tenemos que ayudarles para el transporte, con el alojamiento y la comida.
Todo lo recaudado aquí será para poder hacer esto posible y, ya que a los Nepalies no les dan visas para ir a ningún país del mundo salvo India y Singapur, poder traer una buena educación a Nepal.
Project Needs Sometimes the educators coming to Nepal for the music education festival can pay or get grants for their trips and once in Nepal we give them accommodation, some others they cannot pay for it so we need to find the way to bring them. This year we are flying two educators and since the Nepali government or any other organization (besides the USA Embassy) is helping us, we have to ask for help. The fund raised money will be use to fly one of this educators to Nepal, give accommodation and give some scholarships. Every year KJC gives around 40 scholarships with money that we collect from our private donors and fund raise concerts we do. By helping for this cause you are helping many kids getting a music education, something that it is fundamental and also you are helping us to keep changing the perception of a society which believes that music is not a serious subject and the mind of parents who do not want their kids to be musicians. Within the almost 6 years KJC is open we showed that making a living as a musician is not an utopia and some of our students are now music teachers or are studying abroad with scholarships. Help us to keep helping in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the globe.
