Training for 100 Haitian-Dominican Women

The Project

The objective of this project is to train and coach 100 Haitian and Dominican women living in depressed areas so that they can successfully set up and manage their own micro businesses, the only source of income for them and their families.
These women live in the Enriquillo Region, in the South of the Dominican Republic, the poorest in the country, where job opportunities are extremely scarce and where most of the 60,000 Dominicans residents in Spain come from.
Since 2009 Nantik Lum has partnered with the Dominican foundation Sur Futuro to support the women from Enriquillo so that they have a chance to become the true engines of change and development in their communities. During the past year only, we helped almost 500 micro businesses and trained more than 400 women. The women that we aim to train via this project thanks to your support live in the so-called Bateyes (neighborhoods close to cane plantations with limited access to basic services). These women neither possess their own resources nor can access bank credit. Our solution is made up of two components:
1. Access to microcredit, which provides the opportunity to become self employed and generate income for the benefit of their families
2. Training and coaching, which allows these women to acquire the abilities, the knowledge and the confidence they need in order to ensure the success of their small enterprises and the generation of income in the long term.
Why we need your help
We have sufficient resources to cover the needs of the first part of our solution, i.e. access to microcredit. These resources originate from the repayments of the microcredits granted to the women already participating in the project.
In order to grant new microcredits successfully we must combine them with training and coaching activities. These are the activities which require the additional funding that we are soliciting from you. With only €2,650 we would be in a position to grant €62,300 in microcredits to new participants to the project. We would thus multiply your contribution by 24! You would enable us to support 100 new micro business and help 600 Dominicans (6 members per family) to lift themselves out of financial and social exclusion.
Every single Euro donated would go to the activities of training and coaching of the women from the Bateyes.
Microcredits are small loans that generate opportunities for excluded and vulnerable people. They promote sustainable development because they are not donations and therefore encourage savings and efficient management of resources. After ten years working with microcredits at Nantik Lum we have learnt that training and coaching are key to achieve a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the recipients of a microcredit.
